In his nearly 20-year career, Rad has developed innovative methods to make better decisions in the context of complex systems involving uncertainty and non-linear dynamics. Currently a Principal Data Scientist at Motional, he leads the company’s efforts to implement the Rulebooks framework to design and validate autonomous vehicles for maximum safety, lawfulness, and driving performance. Before joining Motional to work on autonomous vehicles, Rad used integrated mathematical models to support global health initiatives as the Vice President of Kid Risk, Inc. and authored over 70 peer-reviewed publications that helped the Global Polio Eradication Initiative make complex decisions and grow to become one of the largest global public health efforts to date. A winner of the Franz Edelman Award for Achievement in Operations Research and the Management Sciences and the Jay Wright Forrester Award for the best contribution to the field of System Dynamics, Rad received his PhD in Applied Mathematics from TU Delft, where he also taught as a professor of Risk and Decision Analysis.
